Should be able to set up a custom rating scale rather than using 5 stars. For instance, many companies use a rating scale of 1 - 4 with specific definitions (does not meet expectations, needs improvement, meets expectations, exceeds expectations). The definitions should be listed at the top of the review for managers to reference. This allows for a more consistent use of the scale rather than allowing for interpretation by different managers. I personally feel the use of stars sends a message to employees that may not align with our intended message. In 20 years, I have never seen an employee review with stars.
