In California, non-exempt employees are required to take a 30-minute meal break, and it must start before the end of their 5th hour of work. If an employee does not take a full 30-minute meal break and/or it does not start before the end of the 5th hour of work, the employer is required to pay the employee 1 hour of penalty pay at their regular rate of pay. Even if it is short by 1 minute, they must be paid an extra hour. This is time that is not billable to clients and is an overhead expense, potentially costing employers 1 hour of pay x # of employees x days in pay period. Suggested features:
Send reminder texts to employees when they are at 4.5 hours of work to take their meal break as soon as possible. If working over 8 hours, send another reminder at 9.5 hours to take their 2nd meal break as soon as possible.
Not allow an employee to clock back in from a meal break until they have hit a minimum of 30 minutes with an error message "You have not taken your full 30-minute meal break. Please take a minimum of 30-minutes before clocking in."
