It is critical to our business unit practice that they be able to manually key in the WO order number instead of auto-generating.
Our SM work orders numbers are provided to us by the customer and need to be tracked as such.

Hey Michaeln, We just met with George and team and after discussion it was posed by our leadership that a UD field would really not be ideal as we would have to adjust all reporting and the added value wouldn't be there. The custom WO number used by the business does fall within the current SM vista integer rule set.
Yes, we are open to having it as a user defined field. We would need that user defined field to be editable on the work order.

Do you have any concerns that two customers might request the same work order number? This wouldn't be supported in Vista using the SM Work Order number, however, it might make sense to have a user defined field labeled Owner Work Order number. We could make it so you could fill in that ud field. How would you feel about that direction?
