We post memos and announcements to the dashboard for employees to see. Then I have to turn around and tell everyone to check the portal. It would be helpful if there was a notification option on new documents to send a notification to employees letting know there is something to see. This has become obvious that we need something like this lately because we have switched 401k providers and not everyone has received their timeline memos and important dates.

If it's something you really want employees to see, I'd recommend using the Document - Acknowledgement Required feature. The Company Announcements for the portal's homepage is usually for less important things that wouldn't require a notification.

I've done this for this particular instance since it it 401k related, however it would be nice to have the option for a more general announcement.
I use those when certain things are required, but I guess this could be a work around for notifications.

Are you currently leveraging the Document Library's documents that require signature or acknowledgement? With these documents, you can send out email reminders to employees so they know to login and read the memos?
