We recently became aware of the special instructions for Nonresident Aliens for filling out the W-4.  See attached instruction sheet.

Apparently this has been in affect since 2011 and we did not know about it.  But we need to address this in the onboarding process.  

I can't believe that this has not been pointed out by anyone yet?  It is a federal requirement for all US companies.

Basically, if you are a nonresident alien then when filling out the W-4 there are some constants:

  1) You MUST fill out the W-4 marital status (Line 3) as SINGLE, even if married!

  2) You MUST fill out Allowances (Line 5) as 1.

  3) You MUST write "nonresident alien" or "NRA" on the dotted line of line 6.

  4) You cannot claim you are exempt on line 7!

I would be looking for help to address these issues on the Onboarding W-4 form.

Some suggestions are:

1) on the W-4 form there is a link to the W-4 instructions.  Add another link to the 'Nonresident Alien special instructions' and link to the federal site.  Notice #1392

-The instructions are long and complicated.  Could you highlight the key sections as on my example or add a comment that if you are a nonresident alien you must file as single with allowances of 1?

2) How can we add a note on line 6 about "nonresident alien" or "NRA"?  It is listed as a requirement but I did not see a way to add a note to the Keystyle controlled form? 

3) My best suggestion would be to add a field in the Employee Info form asking if they are a nonresidential alien.  If checked then default the W-4 form to follow the four points above!
